History of the "BREATH OF LIFE" Constant Delivery Resuscitator
Licenced to ISO 8382:1988 (E) International Standard for Resuscitators intended for use with humans. Designed for any person first on the scene of an accident to deliver CPR until professional help arrives.
A life saving encounter with a bloodied roadside victim has led a New Zealand company, McCulloch Medical, to develop a resuscitator that is sweeping up international awards including a gold medal at the 2000 International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva and the 2001 Sony NZ Excellence in Innovation Award. The patented 'Breath of Life'Constant Delivery Resuscitator, unlike traditional Bag Mask Resuscitators, ensures:
Ease of use, utilising its unique Linear Pump Action makes effective single person resuscitation a reality, requiring two rather than three hands.
Consistent*, Adequate Tidal Volume Delivery**, unobtainable using traditional Bag Valve Mask Resuscitators irrespective of user hand size or technique.
Low Fatigue Operation, employing large upper arm and shoulder muscles, rather than small hand and forearm muscles, which fatigue quickly, as used in bag valve mask operation.
Since developing the 'Breath of Life' Resuscitator, McCulloch Medical has been awarded nine international awards including a Gold medal at the 2000 Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva and more recently winning the 2001 Sony NZ Ltd Excellence in Innovation Award.
Research has long highlighted a number of shortcomings with the traditional bag valve masks currently used. This included the inconsistent air delivery to the lungs and the difficulty of a user to deliver prolonged resuscitation due to operator fatigue.
"To get air into the lungs with a bag valve masks a person must squeeze the bag with one or two hands. After a while those small muscles become fatigued. The volume of air being delivered is reliant on the person's hand size, technique, and the length of time they are operating it. The 'Breath of Life' operates on a pump basis. Using the larger muscles of the upper arm to deliver air not only means you can continue resuscitation for longer but the air volume is consistent with each action. There is no other comparable product in the market that can deliver adequate 'tidal volume delivery' (airflow) in compliance with ISO requirements whilst being easy enough for a member of the public to operate" says Mr McCulloch.
"Its rather like the new AED's (Automated External Defibrillators) being used in public places and on aeroplanes. They take care of the cardio or 'C' in CPR, the 'Breath of Life' Resuscitator takes care of the pulmonary or 'P'".
The 'Breath of Life'Resuscitator's innovative design has won international recognition. Mr McCulloch says products like the Resuscitator and AED's, that are easy to use and effective, enabling those who are first on the scene to help save lives until professionals arrive, are going to become more common place.

Australian Distribution
CODE ONE is an Australian family owned and operated First Aid Training & Supply company, located in Sydney
Director of Education & Training, Mark Harris, was so impressed by the "BREATH OF LIFE" that after seeing it "CODE ONE" immediately incorporated the "BREATH OF LIFE" into "CODE ONE'S" Training Courses.
After discussions with McCulloch Medical "CODE ONE" became the local, Australian, distributor for the "BREATH OF LIFE" .
"After twenty six years as an Ambulance Officer, and six years as an Educator, I can honestly say that the "BREATH OF LIFE" is ,without doubt, the best piece of life saving equipment I have seen."
"One of the major problems facing any First Aider is the worry and concern about communicable diseases particurlarly when performing mouth to mouth resuscitation.
Thre are many "face mask" type products available to the First Aider but the drawbacks are that they are, normally, a single use product or at least a part of the device must be renewed after each use.
They also still require the First Aider to, physically perform manual "mouth to mask" resuscitation.
The advantages of the "BREATH OF LIFE" Constant Delivery Resuscitator over these products are that it is REUSEABLE and the First Aider simply has to "pump" the "BREATH OF LIFE" to deliver the required amount of air to the casualty and as the "BREATH OF LIFE" is re-useable, the supplied mask simply needs to be sterilised after use.
Unlike oxygen cylinders the "BREATH OF LIFE" doesn't run out of air. As long as the First Aider pumps the device the supply of air to the casualty is maintained.
One of the greatest advantages of the "BREATH OF LIFE" is its ease of use. Unlike complicated oxygen systems the operating procedure of the "BREATH OF LIFE" can be learnt in under one minute and as it is a simple "pumping" action it is easy to remember and even if you are unsure there are operating instructions printed on the "BREATH OF LIFE".
When you consider that the "BREATH OF LIFE" is inexpensive, easy to use and re-useable it just makes sense to use the "BREATH OF LIFE" as the resuscitator of choice"
